  • 28/04/2017 - Eurotunnel inaugurates new Freight Shuttles to meet traffic growth

Jacques Gounon, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Groupe Eurotunnel SE, accompanied by Xavier Bertrand, President of the Hauts-de-France Region, today inaugurated the first of three new, third generation Freight Shuttles.

With the boom in the digital economy and the concentration of cross-Channel traffic onto the shortest routes, particularly in light of environmental concerns, the market for Eurotunnel’s Le Shuttle Freight is set to continue its growth over the coming years. In response to this demand and to reach its objective of transporting 2 million trucks in 2020, Eurotunnel has invested €40 million to acquire three new, 800m long Freight Shuttles, each made up of 32 carrier wagons, three loaders and a club car for the truck drivers.

Made to order by WBN Waggonbau Niesky GmbH for Eurotunnel, and benefitting from the latest developments in technology to ensure energy efficiency, strength and reliability, these three new Shuttles will strengthen the existing fleet and bring an additional 20% capacity, enabling Eurotunnel to offer up to 8 departures per hour.

Jacques Gounon, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Groupe Eurotunnel, stated: “With the entry into service of three new Freight Shuttles, for the first time since January 1999,Eurotunnel starts a new phase of its development by offering, on top of the speed of crossing, an unrivalled frequency of departure”.

In March 2017, Le Shuttle Freight achieved a new all-time record, transporting 151,245 trucks, an increase of 5% compared to March 2016, the month the previous record was set. Since the start of the year, almost 410,000 trucks have crossed the Channel on Eurotunnel's Shuttle Service.

Passenger traffic in March 2017 reduced compared to March 2016, with 159,001 vehiclescarried, heavily impacted by the negative impact of the calendar, with Easter, which generates high levels of tourist traffic, falling in April in 2017, as opposed to in March in 2016.

With a car1 market share of 64.6% for the Short Straits in February 2017, Le Shuttle achieved its best performance since opening in 1994. The increase in Eurotunnel Le Shuttle's passenger market share during the start of the year confirms the underlying attraction and strength of the service.

  • 17/03/2017 - Eurotunnel welcomes 25 millionth truck

At approximately 04:00 this morning, Eurotunnel welcomed the 25 millionth truck to use its Le Shuttle Freight service since the service began on 25 July 1994

This 25 millionth truck, from the fleet operated by UPS, the express courier specialist, was carrying packages from Germany, many containing items such as clothing, shoes or electronics purchased the previous day via the Internet. The rapid growth in e-commerce, between 20-30% per anum, shows how essential the Channel Tunnel has become in the transport and logistics infrastructure linking the United Kingdom to continental Europe. Approximately one million e-commerce packages transit via the Channel Tunnel every day.

EY, in its research paper, "Economic Footprint of the Channel Tunnel", published in November 2016, estimated that goods linked to express and courier services transported through the Channel Tunnel have a value of around €30 billion per year and are responsible for 272,000 jobs across Europe.
